Established in 2015 in memory of WVC Football Coach - Daniel Morgan to provide scholarships for athletes majoring in Physical Education or Kinesiology.
Coaches often know best, and that is how the West Valley College (WVC) Scholar Athlete Scholarship Endowment came to fruition. When the WVC football program was put to rest a few years ago, two WVC faculty members, Coach James "Jim" Winkler and Coach Bruce Watson, wanted to create an endowment that would provide scholarship opportunities for student athletes.
Additionally, both coaches were interested in creating an endowment that would memorialize their friend, Daniel "Dan" Morgan, a former West Valley College football coach who passed away suddenly in 2006.
Throughout his life, Coach Dan Morgan wore several hats - as a WVC student and an athlete on its football team and later emerging as a football coach. Before his assignment at WVC, he coached baseball and football at several local high schools. Previously, he coached youth baseball and served as president of the Union Little League.
"Coach Morgan was a true Viking, first as a student athlete and later as a coach," said Coach Winkler.
"By establishing this endowment, his legacy will continue to live on and we'll be able to assist other Viking athletes as they excel in their education."
The WVC Scholar Athlete Scholarship Endowment is open to students who meet the following criteria: Possess a grade point average of 3.5 or above, have successfully competed in an intercollegiate sport for at least one season at West Valley College, and have no remaining athletic eligibility at the community college level. Applicants must also be seeking a career in Physical Education or Kinesiology. We invite you to make a tax-deductible contribution to this fund. 100% of every donation to this fund will be distributed as scholarship support.
