Established in 2013 to provide a perpetual support to campus programs that benefit West Valley College students with disabilities.
Making a difference - that is what it's all about when it comes to David Wang, a West Valley College (West Valley College) student. While attending community college, David was involved in student government and contributed to the culture of the college.
In 2013, David expressed a desire to "give back" and was in search of a way he could assist fellow students especially those who also faced mental health challenges. He shared the idea with his parents, Arthur and Christina Wang, and they immediately embraced the concept and soon after emerged the David Wang Educational Endowment Fund.
Through generous donations by the Wang Family, funds will help assist in enriching the lives of students utilizing the services of West Valley College's Disability and Educational Support Program (DESP).
"I know first-hand the challenges many students encounter when attending college," said David Wang. "If I am able to improve the college experience for students who face life with the daily challenges of a disability then I am making a difference, and that feels good."
David's parents see the value in helping students with similar challenges as their son succeed in college. "Community college is an ideal learning environment," said Arthur Wang, "and anything we can do to encourage the learning process for students with mental disabilities, we are happy to endorse."
To ensure equal access to all campus programs, services, and facilities and to facilitate academic success, the West Valley College DESP provides ongoing support to participating students. The program renders a variety of key services including counseling, tutoring, note-takers, assistive technology, and adapted furniture and equipment.
"We deeply appreciate the endowment from the Wang Family," said Cheryl Miller, West Valley College Director of Disability and Educational Support Program (DESP). "The generous contribution from the Wang family will help our program provide essential services that assist students with disabilities helping them achieve their educational goals."
