About this Endowment

The Daniel E. Furtado Veterans Resource Center at West Valley College is dedicated to supporting students academically while fostering a sense of community and communication among veteran and military reserve students and West Valley College faculty, administration and staff.

Daniel E. Furtado was born in Campbell , CA, where he attended local public schools and graduated from Campbell High School. Dr. Furtado was commissioned in the Army Medical Service Corps after completing a four-year ROTC program. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University in Applied Arts and Science, and subsequently a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of California and a Master of Public Administration degree form the University of San Francisco. He spent two years on active duty as Chief of Pharmacology at the Academy of Health Sciences, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He served as Clinical Coordinator, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Palo Alto, and as a clinical pharmacist at O'Connor Hospital at Campbell. He was appointed Associate Director, Primary Care Associate Program, and Senior Lecturer at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dan has been active in civic and community affairs for several years, and served as a member of the City Council. He was Mayor of the City of Campbell in 1999, 2003, and 2007. He served on the boards of the Association of Bay Area Governments, the League of California Cities, and the National League of Cities.

His military reserve assignments included service as Chief, Pharmacy Service, Training Officer, Personnel Officer, and Adjutant, 6253rd US Army Hospital. He also served as Commandant, 6227th Reserve Forces School, Presidio of San Francisco. He was also Chief of Pharmacy, 352nd Combat Support Hospital, and later Chief Pharmacy Officer, 3rd MEDCOM, Atlanta, Medical Group in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After four years, he was named Commander, 5th Brigade, 104th Division. Colonel Furtado retired from active military service in 2004. Subsequently, he was appointed to serve as US Army Reserve Ambassador for California. Dan is a graduate of the Army War College and a Distinguished Member of the Army Medical Department Regiment.
