Established on August 6, 2013, to provide a perpetual scholarship award for veterans, currently serving service members, or family members of a fallen veteran who are computer science, technology, or art majors at West Valley College.
The Sgt. Adam W. Estep Memorial Scholarship Endowment was founded by his father and West Valley College alumnus Kenneth Estep, family, and friends. Adam was the son of Kenneth and Ann Estep.
Adam was the quintessential all-American boy who was raised in Campbell, California, and became part of the fabric of that community. He had tremendous aptitude and passion for computers, gaming, and art. One year after graduating from Prospect High School, Adam joined the Army in order to pay for his college education. His four-year commitment to the Army on April 12, 2004; however, the Army extended his tour of duty by fourteen months and sent his unit, the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, to Iraq. He was killed on April 29, 2004, when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his patrol in Baghdad.
His high school sweetheart and wife of two months, Demara Estep, said, "My husband longed to go to college."
The Sgt. Adam W. Estep Memorial Scholarship Endowment will benefit local veterans and their families who wish to attend West Valley College. Both Adam and his father, Ken Estep, are members.
Adam enjoyed technology, a passion from his father, and art, a passion from his mother. This scholarship provides for both.
Former military buddies and friends remember Adam as a true friend, a listener who valued education, wit, and humor. For Adam, his personal story and feelings were captured in his artistic expression and zeal for computers and computer gaming.
