Established in December 2010 to provide scholarships benefiting re-entry students and military veterans attending West Valley College.
Joyce LeVon enrolled at West Valley College in the Fall 1982. While attending West Valley College as a re-entry student, Joyce LeVon enjoyed the beautiful campus while taking challenging courses. She had classes with very bright and hardworking classmates. The students and the dedicated instructors and counselors were all a part of her learning experience at West Valley College.
Joyce was born in Chicago, where she met and married her husband Henry. They moved to California, where Joyce started a career with Pacific Telephone. After 14 years, she took an educational leave of absence from her job to attend West Valley College for the sole purpose of learning. While attending West Valley College, Joyce developed her love of learning and chose to earn an A.A. degree in History - which she did graduating with honors in 1985. Her love of learning inspired Joyce to transfer to Santa Clara University where she earned two degrees - one in History and another in Philosophy. She retired from AT&T in 2006.
Joyce's husband Henry was born in Evanston, Illinois to parents Anna and Mihran LeVon. His parents were Armenian immigrants who worked together in their tailor shop. His father served in the Navy and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois. After graduating from Evanston Township High School, Henry enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Germany and served as a flight engineer on B-29 aircraft. Henry retired from the carpet industry in 2000.
It was Joyce's love of education as a re-entry student and Henry's experience in the armed forces and that of his father, that inspired establishing a scholarship to benefit re-entry students and military veterans attending West Valley College.
The Henry and Joyce LeVon Scholarship Endowment will assist generations of West Valley College students regardless of major or course of study.
West Valley College offers an opportunity for students to achieve their educational goal. This scholarship was established for re-entry students and to honor military veterans.
