Edward (Ed) Lodi started teaching math at West Valley College in 1965, after deciding
that being a top-secret scientist at Lockheed wasn’t his passion. Ed was so dedicated
to his students that after he retired, he decided to teach part time until he was
85 years old! If he hadn’t moved to Arizona, he most likely would’ve continued teaching
until his passing in December of 2022.
During his tenure, he wrote 25 math/computer science books with some of his beloved
colleagues. In 1994, he received the distinguished Hayward Award in which colleagues
select an instructor who demonstrates the highest level of commitment to their students,
college and profession.
Ed was very committed to his family. He was married to his wife Rose for 65 years,
raised 6 children and was a devoted grandpa to 10 and 1 great grandchild. He enjoyed
spending summers at the cabin that he and two math colleagues built near Pinecrest,
CA. You could often find him sailing on his 16’ Hobie Cat at Pinecrest Lake. Another
passion Ed had was bowling. In fact, he bowled a perfect 300 just shy of his 80th
birthday!
